Our
History

David
Posnack Hebrew Day School (DPHDS) opened its doors nearly 35 years
ago. What started in 1974 as the dream of a handful of highly
motivated parents has grown from single elementary day school with
14 students into one of Broward County's premier K-12 educational
institutions. The m iddle school, a natural outgrowth of our K-5
success, broke ground for its new building in 1995 when it was
already bursting at the seams with students. A second elementary
campus opened in Davie in 1996 to meet the growing demands of
parents and the Jewish community. Our high school opened in 1998.
Today, system-wide enrollment stands at 725.
The high school opened on the Plantation campus in August 1998 with
a freshmen class of 18 students. The first classrooms were the small
bungalows known as the Gables. Each year over the next four years
brought more students and demands for space, the high school
utilized classrooms in the Soref JCC and occupied portable
classrooms on the JCC's front lawn. Soref Hall was used for
assemblies, Tefillah, and band. The Class of 2002 graduated two
months before the new upper school building was completed and
occupied. There are flagstones in the upper school courtyard with
the handprints of the Class of 2002 set in cement. Over the years,
the number of faculty increased to meet the demands of the growing
program. The Class of 2008 will be the largest graduating class to
date with over 40 students.
The high school celebrates its tenth
anniversary this fall and can proudly announce its 100% college
acceptance rate for its graduating seniors.
Our schools are noted for their warm and nurturing environments and
individualized academic rigor. The professional staff knows each
student by name, interests, and achievements. Students feel safe to
be curious and excited about school, to ask questions and seek
answers, and to strive for their personal best. And parents, too,
play an integral role in DPHDS, contributing to our school's
friendly atmosphere, engendering the strong sense of school
community spirit, and encouraging academic excellence.
