Middle School Guidance

The David Posnack Hebrew Day School (DPHDS) provides counseling services for
all of its middle school students. Our middle school guidance
counselors are specially trained to provide guidance for
this age
group. They work with individuals, groups, and classrooms; review
test results and help identify students' abilities, needs,
interests, and achievements; assist students in planning schedules
that match their ability as well as meet all state and federal
requirements; monitor students’ academic progress; and listen and
maintain all confidences.
Our guidance
office serves several purposes: It helps students develop greater
self-understanding and build self-confidence; encourages them to do
their best and succeed in school; gives them an opportunity to talk
about educational, personal, and social concerns; gives them the
tools to balance the school and home life; and supplies them with
critical decision-making and problem-solving skills.
Our counselors
have multiple constituencies. They not only assist students; they
also advise teachers, parents, and even administrators. They answer
critical questions and calm anxieties. DPHDS counseling staff
handle common and uncommon complaints and concerns alike:

"I'm new here and the
other kids aren't very friendly."
"I just want to talk
to someone who won't laugh at me."
"My parents are
getting a divorce."
"I need some ideas for
helping my students get along together."
"Sally is absent too
often."
"I'm worried about my
child/student. Her grades are dropping."
To see a counselor, students only have to ask. DPHDS works on a
self-referral basis, recognizing that students will know, just as
well as their teachers or parents, when they have a problem that
needs an outside perspective.
